with apologies to John McCrae (author of ‘In Flanders Fields’)
In our republic voters know
That if they fickle feelings show
That change will come; and though hope springs
That change will better circumstance, ’stead brings
But losses, and our cynicism grows.
We’ve lost our heads. We grasp at straws
And though discarded reason gnaws
We hold a hand of jokers’ cards
In our republic.
Pray that we find our minds again:
That citizens should think, and then
We may see wisdom in a trade
Of clowns for leaders; then have made
A wiser choice than rabid base
In our republic.
