When you’re too cool to remember me

When you’re too cool to remember me
I’ll remember the nights of bad dreams,
Of the calls down the hall for the familiar and safe
Of the tight clench of arms around my neck
Of the daddy in my ear I had a bad dream
Of your breath on my neck, your hair on my arm
I’ll remember the gift of safety for as long as
I can give it
I’ll treasure the chance to have been safe harbor
For a child growing into her own
Knowing that in the future, your own child
Will call mommy in your ear I had a bad dream
And the gift your body gives her
Will have the memories of this time
Until the day she’s too cool to remember you.
